August 19, 2011: Howard Hughes 1938 World’s Fair Flight

World's Fair Parade - Photo 1World's Fair Parade - Photo 4

Back on July 13 I asked for help identifying photos sent in by Teresa Moller,  of a ticker-tape parade in New York City. The other day I received an e-mail from J. Steed suggesting that the man sitting to the left of Grover Whalen was Howard Hughes. I mentioned this to my friend and World’s Fair Historian, David Cope, who informed me that Hughes made a record-breaking “Round the World” flight on July 14, 1938, in a plane named “The 1939 New York World’s Fair.”

With this information in hand, and some hours searching the web, all the main people in the photos have been identified as Howard and his flight crew:  Thomas Thurlow (navigator), Edward Lund (flight engineer), Albert I. Lodwick, Howard Hughes, Harry Connor (co-pilot),  Richard Stoddart (radio operator), and Albert I. Lodwick (operations manager).

A new page in the misc. section of the Fair Tour (Howard Hughes Fair Flight) has been posted. Along with Ms. Moller’s photos a few more, courtesy of Richard, www.wingnet.org (Round-the-World-Flights) have been added.

Thanks to everyone who helped, either directly or indirectly.
